What is Coenzyme Q10 and why is it important to our bodies?

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a fat-soluble nutrient found in every cell in the body and is necessary for the basic functioning of cells. Higher concentrations of this nutrient are found in organs that work extra hard and require a significant amount of cellular energy to function, such as the heart, liver, kidney and pancreases.

CoQ10 is vital to the trillions of cells in the body that must make their own energy to survive. To make energy, cells burn sugars and fats that come from the foods we eat. These nutrients are broken down and carried through an energy producing pathway that requires COQ10. This energy-producing process is repeated thousands of times a second and fuels your beating heart and other body organs that require a continuous flow of energy. Without COQ1 O cells would not be able to produce energy and organs would not be able to function properly.

CoQ10 has been shown to help strengthen heart muscles, support blood pumping capacity and improves blood circulation throughout the body. CoQ10 also promotes the integrity of blood vessels which in turn supports healthy blood pressure levels.

CoQ1O also works as a powerful antioxidant and helps protect arteries against oxidation of low density lipoproteins (LDL) and facilitates blood flow.” This is important to help promote the functions of blood vessels,  including those that transport blood to the heart.

How much dietary intake of Coenzyme Q10 do we need?

Dietary intake helps maintain CoQ1O levels, however the amount of OoQ10 consumed from food is typically less than 10mg a day. Take a look at the chart below to see the amount of CoQ10 in some commonly consumed foods:

Food Serving CoQ10(mg)
Beef 85g 2.6
Chicken 85g 1.4
Peanuts, roasted 28g 0.8
Broccoli, boiled 1/2 cup, chopped 0.5
Orange 1 medium 0.3
Strawberries 1/2 cup 0.1
Egg, boiled 1 medium 0.1

Furthermore, the body’s ability to produce CoQ10 declines according to age Based on a research study, OoQ1O reaches a peak in the body by the age of 20 but decreases from 20 years old onwards. At the age of 40, our heart only has 68.2% of CoQ1O we had in our bodies at the age ofb20.

Other factors such as poor diet, daily exposure to tree radicals and use of certain medications ie cholesterol-lowering drugs may reduce our COQ10 levels. Therefore, supplementation may help to maintain cellular levels of this crucial nutrient in our bodies.
